Going Mobile: Taking the studio out of the studio…

studiotogoSo after months of preparation, consolidation and testing, my new mobile recording rig is fully operational. The switch from high-end PC to Macbook has been surprisingly painless, and the Motu hardware and drivers are doing their designers proud.

Probably the most difficult (and costly) part of building a decent recording system is acquiring enough high-quality microphones, and I think I’ve managed to amass a decent selection while keeping costs under control. Decent small-diaphragm condenser mics are expensive little weapons, but they amaze every time with their sensitivity and detail.

The entire rig now fits into a space roughly equivalent of 2 small suitcases (not including mic stands) and can be installed and set up in about half an hour. One of my key concerns on setting up Chorus Audio was that the system should be compact and unobtrusive. A tangle of cables may simply be a health and safety issue…
